HP Printers - 'Unsuccessful Network Installation' error (Windows)

HP Printers - 'Unsuccessful Network Installation' error (Windows)

When you attempt to install the full feature print driver and software (HP Printer Assistant) for a wireless network, an Unsuccessful Network Installation error message displays.

Restart the printer, router, and computer

Resolve any error states by restarting network-connected devices.

  1. Turn off the printer.

  2. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables from the printer. These connection types can prevent the printer from connecting to the wireless network.

  3. Disconnect the power cord from the Wi-Fi router, wait fifteen seconds, reconnect the cord, and then wait for the lights to display a connected status.

  4. Restart the computer.

  5. Turn on the printer.

Uninstall the HP printer software (Windows)

Uninstall HP printer software, and then remove the printer from your Devices list.

  1. Disconnect the printer from the computer or network.

  2. In Windows, search for and open Add or remove programs.

  3. In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer name, and then click Uninstall. If your printer name does not display, select HP Smart, and then click Uninstall.

  4. If a User Account Control message displays, click Yes.

  5. Follow the instructions to complete the software removal, and then restart the computer.

    NOTE:

If the uninstall fails, use the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter (in English), and then try uninstalling again.

  6. In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.

  7. Click Devices and Printers.

  8. For each printer icon that represents the name of your HP printer, right-click the icon, and then click Remove Device or Uninstall device.

    NOTE:

If no printer icons display, the printer has already been removed.

The printer software and driver is uninstalled.

Other related HP software might remain on the system. If you do not want a particular software title, uninstall it from Add or remove programs.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor on your Windows computer to help diagnose and fix printing and scanning issues.

  1. Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer.

  2. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor, and then follow the prompts to install and open the tool.

  3. On the welcome screen, click Start to select your printer and run the diagnostic.

  4. If your printer is not found, click My product is not listed, and then follow the instructions to troubleshoot the connection.

Repair Windows system files

Use the Microsoft System File Checker (SFC) utility to repair damaged or corrupt system files.

  1. Close all open programs and apps running in Windows.

  2. Search Windows for command, right-click Command Prompt from the list of search results, and then select Run as Administrator.

  3. Type sfc /scannow in the command prompt, and then press Enter.

  4. If a Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them message displays, reinstall the HP driver and software.

Other install methods to try

One of the following installation methods might resolve the installation issue.

Install the HP Smart app and set up the printer

Get the HP Smart app for Android, Apple iOS and iPadOS, Windows, and macOS to set up and use your HP printer to print, scan, copy, and to manage settings.

Do the following if you are setting up the printer on a Wi-Fi network.

  • Place the printer and the computer or mobile device near the Wi-Fi router.

  • Turn on Wi-Fi on your computer or mobile device and connect to your network. If the computer is connected to the network with an Ethernet cable, temporarily disconnect the cable and use the Wi-Fi connection during the setup.

  • Enable Bluetooth on the computer or mobile device so that HP Smart can detect the printer during the setup.

  • For Windows computers, turn on Windows Update to make sure Windows is always up to date.

  • After installing HP Smart for iOS and Android, enable the mobile device location service and allow the app to use your location to detect the printer and offer solutions during setup.

  1. Download the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com (Android, Apple iOS), HP Smart - Microsoft Store (Windows, in English), or HP Smart - Mac App Store (macOS, in English).

If you are prompted to sign in with Microsoft to use the app across devices, you can sign in or click No, thanks to continue.

    NOTE:

Disconnect from a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection before downloading.

  2. If you are setting up HP Smart for the first time, you must create or sign in to an HP account to access all printer functions.

  3. From the app home screen, click Add Printer or the Add icon , and then follow the prompts to set up the printer.

If your printer is not found, continue to the next step.

  4. Restore Wi-Fi setup mode.

    • Most printers with a touchscreen display or menu: Open the Wireless  or Setup  menu, select Network setup or Settings, and then select Restore Network Settings.

    • Printers without a touchscreen display or menu: Go to Restore Wi-Fi setup mode on your HP printer to restore default settings by pressing the buttons on your printer.

  5. Within 2 hours, restart the printer, close then re-open HP Smart, and then try adding the printer again.

Install the printer by adding a new TCP/IP port

Add a new TCP/IP port with the Devices and Printers app in Windows to install the printer.

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Search Windows for control panel, and then select Control Panel from the list of results.

  3. Click Hardware and Sound, and then click Devices and Printers.

  4. Click Add a printer.

  5. If available, click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.

  6. Click The printer that I want isn't listed.

  7. Select Add a printer using TCP/IP address or hostname, and then click Next.

  8. Select TCP/IP Device in the Device type drop-down menu.

  9. Type the printer IP address in the Hostname or IP address box.

  10. Remove the selection from Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use, and then click Next.

  11. On the Install the printer driver window, click Windows Update.

  12. After the update completes, select HP in the Manufacturer list, select your printer in the Printers list, and then click Next.

Install the printer using a Universal Print Driver (LaserJet printers)

Downloading and installing a Universal Print Driver (UPD) might resolve the wireless install error for LaserJet printers.

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Go to HP Software and Driver Downloads, and then enter your printer model name and number.

  3. Click Download next to Driver-Universal Print Driver.

  4. When the download completes, open the file and follow the instructions.
